  • The gap between the keys

A paper towel is too wide. A cotton bud is too soft to move anything. Compressed air relocates the problem to somewhere else in the room. The brush and the keycap puller are the two shapes that actually work, and you almost certainly own neither.

  • Four minutes, not a project

Keys, screen, trackpad, earbuds, glasses — start to finish it is about the length of one song. That is the difference between a thing you do and a thing you mean to do.

  • It lives on the desk

Packed down it is phone-sized, so it sits where the mess is. A cleaning kit in a cupboard in another room is a cleaning kit you buy once and never use.

  • 01 — Brush the board

Run the brush between the keys and along the edges first. Most of what is in there comes out at this stage, before you take anything apart.

  • 02 — Lift the worst keys

The keycap puller takes off the four or five keys that actually collect things. You do not need to strip the whole board, and on most laptops you should not try.

  • 03 — Damp cloth, then dry

Two pumps of the spray onto the microfibre, never onto the screen itself, then the second cloth behind it before anything has a chance to streak.

  • 04 — The small stuff

Pen heads for the edge of the trackpad, the ports, the mesh on your earbuds and the hinge of your glasses. This is the part nothing else in your house reaches.

Yes, there are cheaper ones

There are $4 versions of this and there is no point pretending otherwise. They are a brush and a keycap puller and nothing else.

This one has the pen heads, the spray bottle and both cloths — which is the difference between cleaning a keyboard and cleaning a desk. If the brush is genuinely all you want, buy the $4 one. We would rather say that here than have you find out afterwards.

What we're not going to tell you

Every kit like this is sold on how many bacteria live on a keyboard. The number is real, and it is a lazy way to sell a brush, so we are leaving it out.

What this does is get crumbs, dust and skin out from under your keys, and fingerprints off your screen. Nothing about germs. Nothing about health. That is enough of a reason on its own.

  • Free shipping

On everything. No minimum, no working out whether you have spent enough.

  • 30-day returns

If it turns up and it is not what you expected, email us. No photographs, no interrogation, no restocking fee.

  • A real email address

Answered by a person, usually the same day. Small operation, and we would rather hear about a problem than not.
